Thom made a “friend” named “Friend” on the road to Phandalin and has been the party’s talker ever since — when he isn’t getting shot, kicked in the shins, or aged by his own spells.

Appearance

Short shaggy hair and a school uniform that is now more hole than uniform — filthy, torn, and carrying the puncture from the orc javelin at the temple. He looked younger than nineteen before the wild magic took three years off the front of his life; the peach fuzz is new, and so is being asked how old he is.

• Kicked in the shins by the Gnomengarde baker for asking too many questions (Session 2).
• Shot by Facktoré’s crossbow ballista, then put her to sleep with a spell (Session 2).
• Reassured the Gnomengarde guards that mimics can’t turn into people (Session 3).
• Took a free healing potion to the face (thrown by Dax) while still bleeding from the manticore fight (Session 5).
• Negotiated the 60/40 treasure split with the dwarf prospectors — in the party’s favor (Session 5).
• Lit the way into the Temple of Abbathor with Dancing Lights (Session 5).
• Cast Magic Missile at an ochre jelly and triggered a Wild Magic Surge that aged him three years — nineteen going on twenty-two, and permanent. Actual stubble now (Session 5).
• Current holder of the hidden gemstone coffer the dwarves don’t know about (Session 5).
• Talked over the top of Dax’s collapsing lie to the dwarves — loud, fast, and generous with detail — and was the only member of the party they believed (Session 6).
• Brought a light down the passage that exposed the seamless wall Dax then opened (Session 6).
• Sent a mage hand across the orc fight with a healing potion and poured it into an unconscious Hamish, then dropped Sleep on the orcs in the doorway in the same breath (Session 6).
• Lifted the hidden chamber’s emerald with a Mage Hand after Bean had cleared the room for traps, and set off the statue holding it. The gem was fine; Rut and Barnaby were not (Session 7).
• Carries the great emerald, which he can throw one-handed and can barely walk with. By the time the party reached Phandalin he was down to half speed (Session 7).
• Identified the runed stone from Dazlyn’s hand as a sending stone — “like tin cans on a string, if the string were gone” — and used it to reach Norbus (Session 7).
• Keeps the party’s tally: the emerald, the gemstone coffer, and the coin, all in one pot. Showed the offering note around so nobody could say they hadn’t been invited to rob the place (Session 7).
• Put 10 gp of his own money into the bag the party handed Norbus (Session 7).
• Got the party out of the panicking inn and pointed at Harbin’s door (Session 8).
• Attempted to name Guildmaster Thornton to Harbin without naming her — “the lady that you know, that we know, that, you know, she knows, and I know, and you know” — and had to be asked outright (Session 8).
• Talked Harbin up from 90 gold to 100 for information on what Thornton is planning (Session 8).
• Picked up the message cantrip and ran the split party as a switchboard all night: 120 feet, through walls, no word limit, and the target can answer under their breath without spending anything (Session 8).

• Spent two sorcery points to twin Invisibility on himself and Bean — one hour on concentration — and kept a hand on her, because invisibility does not let two people find each other (Session 8).
